I recently needed to replace the built in microwave in my kitchen. I decided that the best replace would be the same brand that I previously had. The exact model is no only available but I got the same size a 1.6 cu foot.
The microwave is mounted on a metal bracket that is screwed to the wall. There are also three screws that come done from the cabinet above. To remove the microwave you unscrew the three screws and pop out the microwave.
Ok so what is the point! The new model microwave actually fit into the existing microwave bracket! The screws thru the cabinet above also aligned perfectly! This struck me as an example of very good engineering. By not changing the bracket and the lay out of the screws between different model generation GE has made my life significantly easier.
All in all I was very happy with the way this worked. I hope this same kind of easy interoperability will spread to the IT industry.
